Defining the Purpose of Your Training

Participants must understand the purpose of the training, and specifically, what they will get from it, personally. Basically, you need to answer the learner’s question of, “What’s in this for me?”.

To do this successfully, you may need to do a bit of research before the session, so you understand the job roles and tasks of the trainees. This way, you can tailor the content to apply to their specific roles and prepare your approach based on information that is important to them.

Purpose of Training

At the beginning of the session, you can start with a focus question that can help to validate the research you conducted.

For example, you could ask, “What safety practices are you responsible for during your shift?”. As the participants respond, ask clarifying questions to further understand their roles and post the answers in a visible area where you can reference back to those responsibilities throughout the class.

Before reviewing each topic, make a statement that ties the tasks into what they are learning.

This practice shows the learners that you genuinely care and want to teach them something that can be applied in the workplace.
